As with any supplement, there is a right and wrong time to take L-Carnitine. If you are used to preloading your supplements and doing a lot of prep work to get the most benefits out of them, you are going to love this one. You can basically take it as you are heading to the gym and get great results.
How It Works
We don’t want to just tell you when to take it and not explain to you how L-Carnitine works. It is important that you understand the process so you know why you would use it at certain times and why other times would just be a waste.
This is a supplement that you can find naturally in your body, and it is responsible for turning fat into energy and transporting that energy throughout the body. So, your body is going to make it all by itself, but if it has any deficiency of the molecule, you can supplement that by taking the pill or liquid form of L-Carnitine.
Once the supplement hits your bloodstream, it starts working immediately, breaking down the cells of fat that are stored in your body and moving them through your body. Basically, it is prepping energy for you to use. That means that shortly after you take the supplement, you should have a supply of energy ready to go.
When to Take It
It doesn’t take long for this process to get ready; so, you can take the supplement just before you start working out. About half an hour before you start your reps is a good schedule to stick to.
You don’t need to take it before you eat, as it will just give you a bunch of energy that you aren’t going to use up. That can make you restless and antsy, and it can agitate your stomach.
If you are part way through your workout and you forgot to take the supplement initially, you can still take it, if you still have some time left on your workout. Remember, it starts working pretty quickly, so you don’t have to wait long for it to kick in and start giving you some energy to work with. Just expect that you will feel like you can work out for longer once you take it, so prepare your schedule accordingly.
If you are taking it on an empty stomach, it’s not a good idea to take more than 500mg. You also don’t want to take L-Carnitine right before bed. You should really only use it when you are prepared to have some energy to burn. If you have an office job or some other work with little physical activity, it’s not a good idea to take it right before you go to work. Save it for when you can burn off that energy and give your body what it needs once the supplement is pumping through the bloodstream.
